Nervous systems/nerves (Noah) Flashcards
What does the Sympathetic NS do?
Goes into action to prepare the organism for physical or mental activity.
Prepares for action.
What does the SNS do?
Allows conscious and voluntary control of our skeletal muscles.
What makes up the CNS
Brain and Spinal Cord
What is a Axon Terminal?
The tail at the end of an axon that passes the signal to the next neuron
What are the 2 main NS’s
CNS and PNS
What is the fancy word for a gap between nerves
Synapsis
What is the Soma?
Where the signals from the dendrites are joined and passed on, also the cell body.
What does CNS stand for?
Central Nervous System
What does PNS stand for?
Peripheral Nervous System
What sort of signal do neurons send?
Electrochemical
What makes up the PNS
All nerves except the brain and spinal cord, e.g. sensory neurons.
What do motor neurons do?
Carry’s signals from the CNS to skeletal muscles to control voluntary movements
What is the Dendrite?
Treelike extensions at the beginning of a neuron that help increase the surface area of the cell body.
What are the 2 parts of the ANS
The Sympathetic NS and the Parasympathetic NS
What do sensory neurons do?
Send signals to the CNS from sensory organs.
What is the Myelin Sheath?
A substance high in fatty lipids and proteins that cover the Axon and make transitions travel faster.
Which 2 systems make up the PNS
The Somatic NS and the Autonomic NS
What does the ANS do?
Controls the automatic functions of the body such as the heart or digestion.
Which 2 neurons are in the SNS
Motor and Sensory
What does the Parasympathetic NS do?
Causes a general slowdown in the body’s functions to conserve energy.
Slows down.
What are neurons?
Specialised cells that transmit electrochemical signals in one direction.
What is the Axon?
Elongated fiber that extends from the cell body to the terminal endings and transmits the neural signal.
