Nervous system (To improve) Flashcards
1
Q
Neurones
A
- Transmit electrochemical signals called nerve impulses
- There are 3 types of neurones:
1. Sensory neurones
2. Relay neurones
3. Motor neurones
2
Q
Synapse
A
The gap between neurones
3
Q
Sensory neurones
A
- Carry impulses from sense organs or receptors to the central nervous system
4
Q
Relay neurones
A
- Provide connections between sensory and motor neurones and between themselves
5
Q
Motor neurones
A
- Stimulate effectors
- Carry impulses from brain or spinal cord to effectors
6
Q
Voluntary vs Reflex action
A
7
Q
Reflex action
A
It is an immediate response to a specific stimulus without conscious control
8
Q
Reflex arc
A
It is a pathway by which impulses travel from receptor to effector
9
Q
Process of a reflex action
A
- A receptor detects the stimulus
- Nerve impulse is generated and travels along the sensory neurone to the spinal cord
- In the spinal cord, nerve impulses are transmitted across a synapse to the relay neurone and then across another synapse to the motor neurone
- Nerve impulse travel along the motor neurone to the effector
- Effector muscle contracts
