Nervous System: Senses Flashcards
What is acetylcholine?
A type of NEUROTRANSMITTER in the somatic nervous system that TRIGGERS the firing of MOTOR NEURONES.
What is aqueous humour?
The clear fluid inside the FRONT part of the eye. It NOURISHES the eye and keeps it INFLATED.
What is astigmatism?
An imperfection in the curvature of the eye where the CORNEA or the LENS has mismatched curves that causes blurred distance and near vision.
The surface is EGG-shaped.
Define (Cochlear)Auditory Nerve.
Behind the cochlea, the auditory nerve is responsible for sending sound vibrations(signals) to the brain.
The part of the nervous system that controls bodily functions that are not consciously directed such as breathing and digestion is known as?
(Not on senses quiz)
The autonomic nervous system.
Basilar membrane:
The MAIN mechanical structure of the inner ear. It presents the FIRST LEVEL of FREQUENCY ANALYSIS in the COCHLEA because of its changing stiffness.
Blind spot in the eye:
Where the OPTIC NERVE passes through the retina, there are NO photoreceptors there to detect light, thus causing a small blind spot.
Cataracts?
Cataracts are common as you get older. They are a CLOUDY area in the LENS of your eye.
What part of the ear is a hollow, spiral shaped bone filled with fluid that plays a key role in the sense of hearing?
The cochlea.
What are the four structures found in the middle ear? (In order)
THE OSSICLES
1) Malleus (hammer)
2) Incus anvil
3) Stirrup stapes
4) Oval window
Main structures in a neuron:
1) Cell body
2) Axon
3) Dendrites
What does the cell body consist of?
It consists of the nucleus and cytoplasm.
What is the nucleus in a neuron?
A membrane bound structure found in the SOMA. It contains the nucleolus and chromosomes, necessary for coded PRODUCTION of PROTEINS.
What is the central nervous system responsible for?
The central nervous system is made up of the BRAIN and SPINAL chord. Its 3 main functions are to take in SENSORY information, PROCESS information and SEND OUT MOTOR signals.
Cerebellum Function:
Important or making postural adjustments in order to maintain BALANCE.
As well as COORDINATION, MOVEMENT and MOTOR SKILLS.
