Nervous System: Cells of Nervous System (HY) Flashcards
What do axons do?
carry signals away from the soma (cell body)
What do dendrites do?
carry signals towards the soma (cell body)
what is the axon hillock?
integrates incoming signals in the cell body; initiates action potential
what is the myelin sheath?
insulation on nerve fibers to prevent signal loss/cross signals and increase speech of conduction along axon
which cells in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system produce myelin?
peripheral nervous system: oligodendrocytes
central nervous system: Schwann cells
what are nodes of Ranvier?
small breaks in the myelin sheath
In the central nervous system, what is a tracts?
tracts are axons bundled together that only carry one type of information
what are glial cells or neuroglia? what are five types of glial cells?
Glial cells play structural and supportive roles in nervous system.
- astrocytes
- ependymal cells
- microglia
- oligodendrocytes
- schwann cells
what do astrocytes do?
- nourish neurons
2. form blood-brain barrier
what do ependymal cells do?
- lines brain ventricles
2. produce cerebrospinal fluid
what do microglia do?
- ingest and break down waste products and pathogens in nervous system
