Nervous System Flashcards
What is the motor (efferent) division of the peripheral nervous system made up of?
The somatic nervous system: voluntary, movement of skeletal muscles. & The autonomic nervous system: involuntary, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and all glands.
The Autonomic nervous system of the motor(efferent) nervous system is further divided. What are the two divisions?
Sympathetic : mobilises body during emergency situations. FIGHT or FLIGHT & Parasympathetic : conserves energy, active during non-emergency functions. REST and DIGEST.
What is the brain stem sub divided into?
Medulla oblongata, Pons, Midbrain
Outline the functions of the brainstem.
Regulation of heart rate, breathing, respiration, sleeping, eating, vomiting , coughing, sneezing.
Where does the Dura mater lie?
Between the skull and the arachnoids mater.
Name the TWO layers of the Dura mater
Inner and outer layer
What is the meninges made up of?
Dura mater Arachnoid mater Pia mater
What is the function of the meninges?
The meninges protect and provide structural support for the brain as well as contain cerebral spinal fluid.
What is the outermost layer of the meninges?
Dura mater (Meaning hard mother) Skull on one side and arachnids mater on the other side.
What is the function of the dura mater?
Attaches the brain to the skull and keeps the brain from moving. It provides the brain and spinal cord with an extra protective layer.
state the names of each layers/mater beginning with the skull and ending with the cerebral cortex.
Skull
Inner layer of Dura mater (periosteal)
Outer layer of Dura mater (meningeal)
Subdural space
Arachnoid mater
Sub Arachnoid space
Pia mater
