Nervous System Flashcards
What is a sense organ
Senses things from internal environment
Flight or fight
Important to animals to respond to their environment (finish this)
The nervous system consists of
Brain and spinal cord
Biological name for nerve
Neurons
The CNS is linked to
Sense organs by neurons which form the peripheral nervous system
What is a neurone
Specialised cells which are adapted to carry electrical impulses.
Dendrite
Receives info and moves down into the axon
Sensory neurones
Always connected to a sense organ. It goes along to the CNS.
Sense organ –> sensory neurone –> CNS –> motor neurone –> effector
Effector: (muscle/gland)
Motor neurone
Moves down the motor neurone to the effector. An effector is either a muscle or a gland.
Relay neurone:
Sense organ picks up info and goes up the sensory neurone and bypasses the CNS and then goes straight to the effector.
Prevent the body from harm
Reflex actions
They are rapid, automatic responses of the nervous system which do not involve the brain (without concious thought)
Instead the signals pass directly from a sensory neurone.
