Nervous System Flashcards
What protects the brain
The meninges and the cerebrospinal fluid
Corpus callosum
Link between two hemispheres of cerebral cortex
Cerebrum (cerebral cortex)
Left side is logical analytical and right side is artistic and creative
Occipital lobe
Visual centre
Temporal lobe
Hearing, visual and verbal memories
Parietal lobe
Touch, position of body and space
Frontal lobe
Intelligence, memory, personality, decision-making and language
Cerebellum
Coordination and balance
Medulla oblongata
Controls heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, swallowing and vomiting
Pons
Connection between the cerebrum and cerebellum
Thalamus
Direct sensory information to the correct lobe
Hypothalamus
Controls the pituitary gland, temperature, Hunger and thirst
Pituitary gland
This is called the master gland and it produces hormones
Motor cortex
Produces movement
Sensory cortex
Interpret sensory information
What is the fight or flight response
Sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system
Adrenaline is released
What is the reflex arc
autonomic response to a stimulus.
not a contrast reaction meaning it is involuntary.
Measures the functioning of the nervous system because a reflex arc has all of the components of the nervous system.
Consist of a sensory neuron, Interneuron and motor neuron
Motor neuron
Carries a nerve impulse to a muscle or gland
Interneuron
Passes the impulse to a motor neuron
Sensory neuron
Carries the impulse from the sensory receptor to the Internet or on in a spinal cord and brain
