Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous system
Consists of the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System
the sensory and motor neurons connect to CNS to the rest of the body
somatic nervous system
division of PNS and controls the skeletal muscles
autonomic nervous system
part of PNS and controls muscles and glands of organs
its sympathetic division arouses
parasympathetic
sympathetic nervous system
division of autonomic
arouses body and mobilizes during stressful moments
parasympathetic nervous system
division of autonomic
calms the body and conserves energy
interneurons
neurons within brain and spinal cord and communicates between sensory and motor neurons
reflex
Sensory neurons—> Internuerons –> Motor Neurons
simple autonomic response to sensory stimulus
example: Knee Jerk
gilal cells
non-neuronal cells that maintain homeostasis
protects the neurons
plays a role in learning and thinking
electroencephalogram (EEG)
recording of the waves of electrical activity that sweep across the brain’s surface.
CT (computed tomography) scan
from different angels and combined by computer into a composite representation of a slice through the body.
PET (positron emission tomography) scan
a visual display where there is brain activity (radioactive form of glucose)
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce computer-generated images of soft tissue
images of specific parts of the brain/body part
