Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain and Spinal Cord (Boss of nervous system)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
On the outside of the body
Nerve Types
1.Carries info to (Sensory Nerve)
2.Carries info away (Motor Nerve)
(Nerves only travel in one direction)
Sensory Nerves
Carries to CNS
Motor Nerves
Relay info from CNS to responders (works the same as sensory nerve just in a different direction)
Muscles work in…
Muscles work in pairs
Reflex Arc
- Receptors
- Sensory Nerves
- CNS
- Motor Nerves
- Responders
Somatic NS
Voluntery actions (ex. walking, talking, writing)
Autonomic NS
Controls all automatic functions (ex. breathing, heart, blinking)
- Sympathetic- Stress (fight or flight)
- Parasympathetic- peace (return to normal)
NS Disorders
Botulism-toxin prevents the release of neurotransmitters
Tetnis-toxin blocks enzymes that destroy neurotransmitters after release
Multiple Sclerosis-MS destroys mylin sheath for the motor nerves
Receptors
- Hair stands up- cold air or scared
- Blood vessils bring- oxygen, heat and nutrients
