Hearing, The Ear Flashcards
Sound waves
Pitch and loudness
Pitch
Heights are the same between high and low. Wavelengths are different and effect the pitch.
Loudness
Wavelengths don’t change in the loudness. The height changes to change the loudness.
Path of sound waves
- Outer ear
- pinna
- auditory canal
- tympanic membrane - Middle ear
- hammer
- anvil
- stirrup - Inner Ear
- oval window
- cochlea
Outer ear
Sound waves move through air
Pinna
Collects sound waves and funnel into the ear
Auditory Canal
Provides physical separation between outside and tympanic membrane
Tympanic membrane
Sound waves hit and it vibrates
3 middle bones
- hammer
- anvil
- stirrup
Middle ear
Sound waves travel through solid
Inner ear
Sound waves travel through liquid
Oval window
Thin membrane
Cochlea
Retains suseptors
Functions of the ear
- hearing (detecting sound waves)
- balance (dynamic equilibrium)
- balance (static equilibrium)
Pitch is determined by…
Pitch is determined by where the hairs are hit
Loudness is determine by….
Loudness is determined by how many hairs are hit
Decibels (dB)
0-120 15-rustling leaves 45-conversations 60-crowd noise 75-vaccuum 90-jack hammer
Euctachian Tubes
connects middle ear to throat (for air pressure)
Ear Infections
-usually starts out as an infection in the throat Child 1. Eustachian tube is shorter 2.Eustachian tube not as steep 3.has an adnoid (lymph nodes)
Lymphnodes
part of the lymph system (liquid)
lymph fluid has to be cleaned in the lymph system with white blood cells
Stereo hearing
2 ears help pinpoint where sound is coming from
