Nervous system Flashcards
What does the Central Nervous System (CNS) consist of ?
brain and spinal cord
What does peripheral nervous system (PNS) consist of?
12 cranial nerves and 31 spinal nerves
What are the spinal nerves and how many of each?
8 cervical nerves 12 thoracic nerves 5 lumbar nerves 5 sacral nerves 1 coccygeal nerve
What are the components of Neuron?
Dendrites, cell, axon
What is the function of dendrites?
conduct electrical impulses toward cell body
What are cell bodies called outside of CNS?
ganglion
What is the function of axons?
conducts electrical impulses away from cell body
What is a synapse?
it is the gap between 2 nerves; where axon releases chemical neurotransmitters onto dendrites to convey a deep to dura mater impulse
What are the components of spinal nerve roots?
Posterior contain sensory fibers (associated w/ ganglion)
Anterior contain motor fibers
Spinal roots converge to form?
Spinal nerve
Spinal nerve branches into?
Posterior Primary Rami
Anterior Primary Rami
What type of fibers does Primary Rami contain?
Motor and Sensory Fibers
Where does Posterior Primary Rami distribute to?
intrinsic muscles, skin of back (including neck)
Where does Anterior Primary Rami distribute to?
remainder of anterolateral neck, remainder of trunk, and limbs
Where are somatic sensory fibers?
skin of posterior head, neck, trunk, and limbs
