Nervous System Flashcards
Define Stimulus.
Any perceptual changes in the environment that effects the body systems
What are the three functions of the nervous system?
Sensation - detect stimuli
Interpretation - translate sensory info and decide a response.
Reaction - perform a reaction
What are the main difference and similarities between the endocrine system and the nervous system?
The nervous system is wired, rapid and brief
The endocrine system is hormonal, slow and lengthy
What are the two primary nervous systems?
Central Nervous System
Pheripheral Nervous System
The central nervous system is made up by 2 main components. What are they?
Brain and Spinal cord.
The spinal cord is broken up into 4 regions, what are these regions?
Cervical
Thoracic
Lumbar
Sacral
The pheripheral nervous system is spilt into two further systems. What are these and what do they control?
Somatic Nervous System - controls volentary movement
Autonomic Nervous System - Controls involentary movement.
What is a neurons cell body called?
Soma
What is the name of the input area of the neuron?
Dendrites
What is the long thin transmitter area of the Neuron?
Axon
What covers the Axon on a sensory and motor neuron and what is its function?
Myelin Sheath. It is there to act as a conductor which will speed up transmission.
What is the name of the cells wrapped around the Axon?
Schwann cells. They are wrapped tightly around the axon - upto 10 times.
The peripheral nervous system is made up of three types of neurons. What are the names of these neurons?
Motor neurons
Interneurons
Sensory neurons
What are the gaps between the Schwann cells called and what is there function?
Nodes of Ranvier - they allow for quicker relay of the signal. Jumping is quicker than walking.
The Reflex Arc is part of what nervous system?
Automatic Nervous System
