Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Define Cellular Respiration
The chemical process of releasing energy from organic compunds
What compound is used to make energy for plants and animals?
Glucose
What are the two basic types of cellular respiration?
Aerobic - with Oxygen
Anaerobic - without oxygen
What is the aerobic respiration formula?
glucose + oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + water + energy
What is unusual about the Respiration formula?
It is the opposite of photosynthesis
What compounds make up ATP & ADP?
ATP = 3 Phosphate, Ribosome sugar & a nucleotide base.
ADP just has one less Phosphate
What is a metabolic pathway?
A series of small reaction controlled by enzymes
What are the 4 stages to aerobic respiration?
Glycolysis
The Link Reaction
The Krebs Cycle
Oxidative Phosphorylation (Electron Transport Chain)
What is Glycolysis and where does it happen?
This is when the Glucose sugar is split into 2 using ATP to create Pryruvic Acid.
Happens in the cytoplasm.
What is the Krebs cycle and where does it happen?
This is the removal of hydrogen from the Pryuvic acid and this happens in the matrix of the mitochondria.
What is the purpose of the Oxidation Phosphorylation and where does it happen?
Using the hydrogen ions to produce lots of ATP, and it takes place in the mitochondrial membrane
What is a co enzyme?
A molecule that aids an enzyme to carry out its function. As with all enzymes, these enzymes get recycled.
What is Oxidation and Reduction?
Oxidation is loss and reduction is gain.
This can happen with oxygen, hydrogen or electron transfer.
What are the two Electron/Hydrogen carriers in cellular respiration?
NAD & FAD.
They carry hydrogen ions to the final phase of cellular respiration , oxidative phosphrylation
