Nervous system 3 (PNS and Autonomic nervous system) Flashcards
What 2 nervous sytems are motor nerve subdivided into
Somantic and autonomic nervous system
What is somantic nervous system
Control voluntary actions:
Conducts impulses from CNS to voluntary muscles
eg running clapping..
What is the autonomic nervous system
Controls all invlountary actions
eg blinking, peristalsis, sneezing
(conducts impulses from CNS to smooth muscles and glands..involuntary)
List the 2 functions of the PNS
Conduct nerve impulses
1, from receptors to CNS (via sensory neurons)
2. form CNS to effectirs (via motor neurons)
What are reflex actions
quick
autonomic response of an effector to the stimulus
Actions that occur independently of the brain (takes place subconsciously)
Function of reflex actions
Protective function
Allow body to rapidly respond to harmful stimuli
Protect body from injuries (think burn)
Reflexes such as coughing, sneezing and blinking are controlled by … in the brain
Medulla oblongata
What are learnt or conditioned reflexes and examples
Reflexes learnt through repetition (obvs. learnt or natural reflexes occur automatically in response to a stimulus, born with it )
eg: cycling, walking, writing, reading
What 2 parts of the brain are involved in the process of learning conditioned reflexes until they become automatic
cerebrum and cerebellum
NATURAL or unconditioned reflex
(obvs. learnt or natural reflexes occur automatically in response to a stimulus, born with it )
What is a reflex arc
A pathway along which impulses are carried from receptor to an effector to bring about a reflex action
what is the fucntional unit of the nervous system
a reflex arc
2 functions of reflex arc
- Rapid to provide the hand form further injury’
2. Prevents overload of higher centres of the brain
Function of the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system
prepares body fro emergency (use of hormone adrenalin)
Flight or fight response
Function of parasimpathetic division
Allows body to return to normal after simulation by the sympathetic division (therefore two systems are antagonistic to each other)
