Nervous System 2 - Ex 22 questions Flashcards
In function, how does the posterior spinal root differ from the anterior spinal root?
Posterior spinal root: brings sensory info to the CNS from receptors.
Anterior spinal root: send motor signals from CNS to effectors
Where is the terminal filum found?
Found attaching the inferior portion (L1/ L2 conus medullaris) of the spinal cord to the coccyx.
What is the conus medullaris?
The terminal portion of the spinal, which terminates inferiorly at approximately vertebra L1
What is the cauda equina?
A structure that is composed of parallel fibers that continue from the conus medullaris (to the coccyx).
Describe difference in location of white and gray matter of the spinal cord vs the brain.
Spinal cord: gray is deep to white
Brain: white is deep to gray
What is the area of gray matter found btw the lateral halves of the spinal cord?
Gray (central) commissure.
What is a mixed nerve?
A bundle of nerve cell processes (axons) carrying both sensory and motor information (afferent & efferent).
The sciatic nerve is composed of two nerves. What are they?
The tibial and common fibular (peroneal) nerve.
What structure receives stimuli from the external environment and relays that stimuli to the afferent neuron?
receptor
What is another name for an efferent neuron?
motor neuron
What is a reflex?
a motor response to a stimulus without conscious thought.
What kind of reflex has only two neurons?
monosynaptic reflex arcs
Polysynaptic reflexes have a neuron specific to them. What is the name of the neuron?
Association neuron (interneuron)
Know how to draw a monosynaptic reflex arc.
-
What action occurs with a hyperrreflexic response? What action happens with a hyporeflexic response?
hyperreflexive response: showing an exaggerated response.
Hyporeflexic response: showing less than average response.
