What does the nervous system involve
Coordinate voluntary and involuntary actions

What does the blood brain barrier do?
Prevents toxic substances crossing from the blood to the brain.
What can the peripheral nervous system be divided into?
Autonomic nervous system - regulates the internal environment
Somatic nervous system - interacts with the external environment

carry signals to the central nervous system.
What does Efferent nerve do?
carry signal AWAY from the central nervous system
What does the somatic nervous system consist of?
Consists of both afferent nerves and efferent nerves
Controls organs under voluntary control
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
controls smooth muscle of the internal glands
Regulates individual organ function and homeostatic
Has two kinds of efferent nerves

Contains 86B neurons
Each neuron has about 10,000 synapses
What is the brain divided into?
Two halves called hemisphere
Hemispheres are connected by tracts
Tracts known as cerebral commishres
The largest is the corpus Callosum
What is the Gyrus?
A ridge or fold on the surface of the brain

receives visual , auditory and somatosensory
What is the tectum?
involved in eye movement and auditory system
What does the brainstem do?
Connects and transmits signals from the brain to the spinal cord, controlling functions such as breathing & heart rates.
What is the function of hypothalamus?
Regulates the pituitary gland which controls the release of hormones throughout the body.
