Brain Flashcards
Outline sulcus
Groove or furrow on the surface of the brain - wrinkles
Outline fissure
Long narrow crack which is a deep sulcus
It separates one lobe from another
What are the five major divisions in the brain in three areas?
Forebrain - the biggest
Midbrain - centre of the brain
Hindbrain - crucial for managing automatic functions such as heart rate
What does the forebrain consist of
Telenecephan
Diencephalon
What are hemispheres covered by?
A large tissue known as the cerebral cortex and this is deeply convoluted
What is the sympathetic nervous system ?
Flight or fight response
Psychological Arousal
Pupils dilate
What is the cerebrospinal fluid?
Acts as a shock absorber
Protects the brain and reduces the weight of the brain
Plays a role in nourishment in the brain by removing waste product
How does the cerebrospinal fluid work?
Filling up the subarachnoid space, central canal of the spinal cord and cerebral ventricles
It supports and cushions the brain
What happens in the cerebrospinal fluid becomes blocked
Hydrocephalus will release, this is known as water head which is common in children
It increases damage to other areas of the brain
How do we treat hydrocephalus?
We have to drain the water using a tube into the brain
Outline meninges
Provides protection inside your brain
Dura Matar - hard mother
Arachnoid mater or membrane
