Genes Flashcards
Outline the importance of protein
A small alternation in the building of a protein can affect an organisms chance of survival
Over 4000 genetic conditions can be caused by a single mutated gene
Who identified DNA Structure
James and crick in the 1950s
What does genes produce?
Proteins which are required for the structure, function and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs
It is made of smaller units of amino acid
Where are genes located?
On chromosomes which are present in the nucleus in every cell
Chromosomes occur in matched pairs
Humans have 23 pairs =46
What causes an action potential to occur?
Hyper polarisation
Threshold of excitation
Depolarisation
Re polarisation
What is an ion?
A charged atom or molecule
It’s an electrostatic force where opposites attract
What is the purpose of Glia?
Keeps the brain alive
Provides nutrients
Provides physical support
Regulates extra cellular fluid
One of the brains cells
How do diploid cells replicate?
By a process called mitosis
What does mitosis do?
Generate a copy of the cells genetic information
All new cells contain copies of all 23 matched pairs of chromosomes
How are haploid cells created?
By a process called Meiosis
What is DNA?
Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule composed of two chains that coil around each other to form a double helix.
- It Carries the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning and reproduction of all living organisms
What do genes do?
Make proteins! Proteins are required for the structure, function & regulation of the body’s tissue and organs
