Nervous System Flashcards
Describe the divisions of the nervous system
It is a body wide network of nerve cells that collect and process info from the world and transmits around the body
central nervous system:
-brain:all conscious and most unconscious processing takes place
-spinal cord: receives and transmits info to and from the brain and body
Peripheral nervous system
-somatic: controls voluntary actions, skelentary movements, sensory neurons relay messages to CNS, motor neurons relay info from CNS to body
-autonomic: controls involuntary actions
- sympathetic: increases bodily activities like heart rate, release neuroadrenaline in fight or flight, neurons go to organs for prepare for rapid action
-parasympathetic: decrease bodily activities like heart rate decrease, relax, rest and digest
Motor neurons
Found in CNs and controls muscle movements
They release neurotransmitters that bind to receptors of muscles to trigger response and lead to movement
Relay neurons
Found between sensory input and motor output
- found in brain and spinal cord and allow sensory and motor neurons to communicate
Sensory neurons
Found in receptors such as eyes ears skin
-carry nerve impulses to spinal cord and brain
-nerve impulses reach brain and translated into sensations
