Localisation Of Function Flashcards
Define localisation of function
Certain areas of the brain is responsible for certain functions
Visual cortex
Located in the optical lobe
- receives and processes visual information
- right hemisphere receives input from the left hand side of visual field
-left hempisphere visual cortex receives input from right hand side of visual field
Diff areas of visual cortex processes diff types of visual info ie colour , shape
Auditory cortex
Located in temporal lobe and is responsible for analysing and processing accoustic info
- info from left ear foes to right hemisphere
-info from right ear goes to left hemisphere
Motor cortex
Located in frontal lobe and is responsible for voluntary movements
Sends signals to the muscles of the body
Broca area
Located in the left hemisphere
-frontal lobe is responsible for speech production
- discovered Paul broca where a patient could only say tan- aphasia
Wernicke area
Locates in left hemisphere in temporal lobe
-responsible for speech comprehension
Named after Carl wernicke as he discovered it
AO3
+evidence of aphasia- damage from broca and wernicke
-aphasia= unable to produce or understand language, so loss of function caused by damaged areas of the brain -eg TAN
+research support from brain scanning techniques
- FMRI- activation region associated with language when pps did language tasks
— individual differences in language activities
- diff variability in patterns of activation- gender differences- women have a larger broca area- superior language skills then men
— research suggests how brain areas communicate with one and other is more important than brain regions controlling specific areas
-wernicke claimed although brain areas have different functions- they are independent in the way they interact- eg patients loss of an ability was sue to damage if the connection of visual cortex and wernicke area
Somatosensory cortex
Located in parterial lobe and processes sensory information from different locations of body
