Endocrine System Flashcards
Pituitary gland
‘Master gland’
-controls the release of hormones from other glands
-anterior(front)- releases ACTH which stimulates adrenal cortex to release cortisol in stress response
Posterior(back) x release oxytocin which is responsible for uterus contraction in childbirth
Hypothalamus
Connected to the pituitary gland and stimulates and controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
Thymus gland
Stimulates the development of T cells in the immune system
- release thymosin
adrenal gland
Adrenal medulla
- release adrenaline and neuroadrenaline in fight or flight
Adrenal cortex
-release cortisol and stimulates the release of glucose to provide the body with energy
Thyroid gland
Release thyroxine
- responsible for regulating metabolism
Pineal gland
Release melatonin
- moderates sleep patterns keeping body in a day and night circadian rhythm
Testes
Release testosterone
-responsible for the development of male sex characteristics during puberty while promoting muscle growth
Ovaries
Release oestrogen
- controls the regulation of the female reproductive system ie pregnancy and menstrual cycle
Define endocrine system
A network of glands across the body that secrete chemical messages called hormones
