Nervous System Flashcards
What are the three parts of the brain
Forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain
What are the three parts of the forebrain
Cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus
What does the cerebrum consist of?
Cerebral cortex, 2 hemispheres and 4 lobes
What are the 4 lobes in the cerebrum?
Frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital
What is the cerebral cortex
Outer 1 mm
What are the two hemispheres connected by?
A band of nervous tissue called the corpus callosum
Frontal lobe
Personality, voluntary movement, speech (Brocas area (motor cortex)), intelligence and memory
Temporal lobe
Auditory reception and wernickes area
Parietal lobe
Interprets sensory info from skin (somato sensory cortex) ie. Temperature, pressure, touch
Occipital lobe
Visual cortex
What does the thalamus do?
Relay sensory info from cerebellum and between forebrain and hindbrain
What does the hypothalamus do?
Responsible for homeostasis
Controls blood pressure, heart rate, body temp, hunger/thirst (basic drive) coordinates action of pituitary gland
What does the midbrain do?
Relay station for eye/ear reflexes
What are the three parts of the hindbrain
Medulla oblongata, pons, cerebellum
What does the medulla oblongata do?
Controls automatic involuntary functions like heart beat, breathing, swallowing, vomiting, blood pressure, digestion
