Cell Reproduction Flashcards
What are the three types of cells?
Germ cells, somatic cells and stem cells
What are germ cells?
Give rise to gametes (egg/sperm)
What are somatic cells?
Body cells
What are stem cells?
Can differentiate into other cell types (you’ve lost most of your stem cells by the time you’re an adult except bone marrow)
What is sexual reproduction?
Results in the combination of genetic material from 2 parents, it introduces genetic variation
What does sexual reproduction require?
Reduction of the chromosome number
What is asexual reproduction?
It forms identical offspring to the parent, only 1 parent, used for growth (increase in size and mass), repair (replace worn out or damaged cells) and differentiation (cell becomes more specialized)
