nervous system Flashcards
describe the process of an action, the response to a stimulus
stimulus affects the receptor which sends signals across the sensory neurone and then the relay neurone, travelling across the synapse using neurotransmitters, up the spinal cord, up to the brain then comes back down through a motor neurone to an effector (usually muscle)
describe the structure of a neurone
axon, myelin sheath which speeds up signals, dendrites on the end
what are stimulants/depressants
either speed up or slow down crossing of synapse
what is a reflex
a reaction that bypasses the brain and goes receptor –> spine –> effector
practical for reaction time
ruler, drop it and catch it, add distractions or energy drinks, etc
