faulty heart valves Flashcards
1
Q
what are some symptoms of faulty heart valves?
A
an irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, swollen feet /ankles
2
Q
how can you fix faulty heart valves
A
replacing the entire valve with an artificial one, replacing the cords supporting the valve, removing excess valve tissue so the valve can close properly
3
Q
what are some downsides to these options
A
tissue valve replacements help avoid blood clots from forming, however they are less durable than artificial valves. artificial valves however require patients to take anti coagulants for blood thinning for the rest of their lives.
