Nervous System Flashcards
is a complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body. It is involved in some way in nearly every body function.
NERVOUS SYSTEM
What are the Major Functions of The Nervous System
Receiving sensory input, Integration of Information, Maintaining homeostasis, Establishing and maintaining mental activity and Controlling muscles and glands
a major function of the nervous system where Sensory receptors monitor numerous external and internal stimuli.
Receiving sensory input
a major function of the nervous system where The brain and spinal cord are the major organs for processing sensory input and initiating responses. The input may produce an immediate response, be stored as memory, or be ignored
Integration of Information
a major function of the nervous system where The nervous system can stimulate or inhibit these activities ( e.g heart cells must contract at a rate that ensures adequate delivery of blood to all tissues of the body) to help maintain homeostasis
Maintaining homeostasis
a major function of the nervous system where The brain is the center of mental activities, including consciousness, thinking, memory, and emotions
Establishing and maintaining mental activity
a major function of the nervous system where Skeletal muscles normally contract only when stimulated by the nervous system; thus, the nervous system controls the major movements of the body by controlling the skeletal muscle. The Nervous system controls secretion from many glands, including sweat glands, salivary glands, and glands of the digestive system.
Controlling muscles and glands
a system that controls secretion from many glands, including sweat glands, salivary glands, and glands of the digestive system
Nervous System
The Nervous System is composed of 2 systems, what are these?
The Central Nervous System (CNS) and The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
this system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is located within the skull, and vertebrae. The brain and spinal cord connect with each other at the foramen magnum of the skull
The Central Nervous System (CNS)
this system consists of all the nervous tissue outside CNS (never and ganglia). It links the CNS with the various parts of the body.
The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The brain and spinal cord connect with each other at what part of the skull?
foramen magnum of the skull
carries information about the different tissues of the body to the CNS and carries commands from the CNS that alter body activities.
The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The PNS has two subdivisions
Sensory division and Motor division
afferent “towards” division
Sensory division
