Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 3 main types of neurons?
Sensory neurons, Interneurons, Motor neurons
What do neurons do ?
Detect, Process and Respond
What do glial cells do ?
support neuron function by 1- forming a isulating myelin sheath on axons 2- by forming a blood-brain barrier
Which structures form the central nervous system(CNS)?
Brain & Spinal cord
Which structures form the peripheral nervous system(PNS)?
peripheral nerves
What is the function of the CNS?
- Pathways for sensory info from nerves to brain
- Pathways for motor info from brain to nerves
What is the function of the PNS?
- Sensory info from sensors to spinal cord/brain
- Motor info from spinal cord/brain to muscle
What is the difference between the sensory (afferent) and the motor (efferent) divisions of the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
sensory (afferent) = arrive at
motor (efferent) = exit
What is transduction?
A conversation from one form to another
What is the somatotopic map?
The brains map of sensory input locations
How is stimulus intensity determined?
Is based on the number of action potentials reaching the brain
What is the functional difference between left and
right brain hemispheres?
Left side
- analytic thought
- logic
- language
- science and math
right side
- holistic thought
- intuition
- creativity
- art and music
What is the function of the brainstem ?
Where all communication signals between brain and spinal cord pass through, keeps you alive.
- memory hook - stem of a flower, if it brakes it dies
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Monitors sensory input to maintain balance and posture, stores movement patterns (walking)
- memory hook - cereBELLum - looks like s bell
What is the function of the Basal Nuclei?
Makes sure you are doing what you want todo, eliminates unwanted movement
