Nervous System Flashcards
Explain what is meant with the life activity or sensitivity of the Nervous System
- identify STIMULI
- by RECEPTORS (means of sense organs)
- convert it to an IMPULSE
- interpret in the brain
- react with EFFECTOR (muscles/glands)
What conducts impulses TO a cell
Dendrites
(HINT: think of the “t” in the word is TO)
Explain what an AXON does in a cell
Conducts impulses AWAY from the cell
(HINT: Think of the “A” in AXON for the word AWAY)
Give a definition of the word STIMULUS
This is for example light, sound and pain. It is received from the EXTERNAL environment.
What is an impulse?
It is formed inside the NEURON and TRANSPORTED to the brain for interpretation.
There are THREE components necessary to be sensitive. Name them.
1) receptors (sense organs)
2) brain
3) effectors (muscles and glands)
Give ONE word for muscles and glands
EFFECTORS
Give ONE word for sense organs
Reeptors
There are 3 different neurons. What are they?
1) Motor neuron
2) Interneuron
3) Sensory Neuron
Provide another definition for MOTOR NEURON and explain why
Multi Polar - lots of out growths takes impulse to effectors
Provide another definition for an INTERNEURON and explain why
Bipolar - 2 runners joining A and C
Provide another definition for the SENSORY NEURON and explain why
Monopolar - one runner (in sense organs to convert stimuli to impulses)
Explain what the human brain is
It is an organ
Why is the human brain an organ?
It has nerve tissue AND blood tissue
What is the section called that is right on the top of the brain?
Cerebrum
What is the function of the Cerebrum?
> voluntary actions
site of awareness
memory, judgement and reasoning
Which section in the brain is responsible for your memory?
Cerebrum
Which section in your brain is responsible for your balance?
Cerebellum
What are the functions of the Cerebellum in your brain?
1) co-ordination of voluntary actions
2) maintaining muscle, tone and balance
Which section in your brain is responsible for your heartbeat and breathing?
Medulla oblangata
Give 2 functions of the medulla oblangata
- heartbeat
- breathing
What is responsible for the movement of impulses to and from the brain?
your spinal cord
Name 2 functions of the spinal cord
1) Controls reflex actions
2) Impulse move to and from the brain
