Life Science - Musculoskeletal Flashcards
2 Components of the Musculoskeletal System
1) Muscles
2) Bones
What enable muscles to MOVE the bones of the skeleton?
Muscles CONTRACT and RELAX
3 Types of Muscles
- Skeleton
- Smooth
- Cardiac or Heart
SMOOTH muscle:
WHERE do you find it and what is its FUNCTION
LOCATION = Digestive system diaphragm FUNCTION = Peristalsis Breathing
SKELETON muscle:
WHERE do you find it and what is its FUNCTION
LOCATION = Connected to bone FUNCTION = Movement
CARDIAC / HEART muscle:
WHERE do you find it and what is its FUNCTION
LOCATION = heart FUNCTION = pump blood through body
Functions of the skeleton?
> > > Protects important organs:
- Ribs protecting lungs,
- Cranium protects brain,
- support the body,
- with muscles for locomotion
What do you call the place where 2 or more BONES meet?
JOINTS
What is the function of JOINTS?
Movement occurs
What do you call the STICKY connective tissue with collagen?
Cartilage
What is the function of CARTILAGE?
Prevents friction and allow movement
What do you call the strong connective tissue between MUSCLE and BONES?
Tendons
What do you call strands of STICKY, FIBROUS and slightly STRETCHY tissue?
LIGAMENTS
What is the function of LIGAMENTS?
Bind bone and cartilage together
What causes the BONES in your body to HARDEN?
Minerals (like calcium, magnesium, phosphorous) fixed in bone tissue
