nervous system Flashcards
Function of Nervous System
Your nervous system is your body’s command center. Originating from your brain, it controls your movements, thoughts and automatic responses to the world around you.
Major Organs of Nervous System
the brain, cerebellum and spinal cord
Difference between Neurons and Neuroglia
Nervous tissue contains two categories of cells — neurons and neuroglia. Neurons are highly specialized nerve cells that generate and conduct nerve impulses. Neuroglia are supporting cells that provide physical sport, remove debris, and provide electrical insulation.
Dendrite
Dendrites are appendages that are designed to receive communications from other cells
Soma
the parts of an organism other than the reproductive cells
Schwann cells
Schwann cells (SCs) are the main glial cells of the peripheral nervous system which wrap around axons of motor and sensory neurons to form the myelin sheath.
Node of Ranvier
Node of Ranvier, periodic gap in the insulating sheath (myelin) on the axon of certain neurons that serves to facilitate the rapid conduction of nerve impulses
Myelin
Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord. It is made up of protein and fatty substances
Axon
Axon, also called nerve fibre, portion of a nerve cell (neuron) that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body.
Axon Terminal
axon terminals are small swellings that are found at the terminal ends of axons.
