Nervous System 1 Flashcards
What are the 3 different types of neuron?
Sensory (afferent)
Interneuron
Motor (efferent)
What is the role of the PNS?
Deliver sensory information to the CNS and carrier motor demands to the peripheral tissues and systems
What is the role of the CNS?
Responsible for integrating, processing and coordinating sensory data and motor commands. Also responsible for higher functions such as intelligence, memory, learning and emotion.
What is the role of neurone synapses?
Neuron carries an electrical impulse (action potential)
Converted into a chemical signal at a synapse with another neuron
Type of chemical (neurotransmitter) released can either inhibit or excite the other neuron.
Define grey matter
primarily neuron cell bodies (plus glia, synapses & etc.); signal selection & processing
Define white matter
primarily myelinated axons; signal transmission
What is the role of the cerebrum?
Conscious thought processes, intellectual functions.
Memory storage and processing.
Conscious and subconscious regulation of skeletal muscle contraction.
What are the divisions of the cerebrum?
2 hemispheres separated by longitudinal fissure, hemispheres connected via commissural pathways.
Surfaces marked by sulci (shallow dips) and gyri (humps).
Divided into 5 main lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital and limbic (also insula). These can be further subdivided.
What are the 3 components of the brainstem?
Midbrain, Pons, Medulla oblongata
Role of midbrain.
Auditory and visual reflexes. Movement control centres.
Cranial nerve nuclei (III & IV)
Role of pons.
Breathing centre.
Cranial nerve nuclei (V to VIII)
Role of medulla oblongata.
Cardiovascular and reflex (eg - swallowing) centres.
Cranial nerve nuclei (IX to XII)
What are the 3 regions of the cerebellum?
Vestibulocerebellum, spinocerebellum, pontocerebellum.
