Nervous Control In Humans Flashcards
What consists of the Central Nervous System?
The brain and spinal cord
What consists of the Peripheral Nervous System?
Cranial nerves and spinal nerves
List the 3 nerve cells
-receptor; detect stimuli
-motor; transports impulses to CNS and organs
-relay; connects the two
Examples of effector organs
-glands/muscles
-biceps and triceps
What is an effector ?
Glands/muscles that bring about a response
What is a synapse ?
The junction of 2 neurones and helps impulses flow in 1 direction
What are vesicles?
They contain neurotransmitters that diffuse from the presynaptic membrane to the postsynaptic membrane
What do the neurotransmitters do?
Diffuse to receptor muscles on post synaptic membrane then a new impulse is sent
What are excitatory drugs and give an example
They increase activity in the CNS making it very alert e.g Amphetamines
What are inhibitory drugs and give examples
They reduce the effect of neurotransmitters
E.g; heroin which acts on the presynaptic membrane to reduce effects of neurotransmitters and reduce sense of pain
Beta blockers which block receptors for neurotransmitters
