Drugs Flashcards
What are drugs?
These are substances taken in the body to alter its chemical reactions
List 2 types of drugs
-medicinal drugs which are prescribed by doctors
-non medicinal drugs which are taken in for recreational purposes
Examples of non-medicinal drugs
-Stimulants such as ecstasy, cocaine & amphetamines give a short lived feeling of well-being
-Depressants such as cocaine & heroin slow response and coordination in the body
-Heroin gives a euphoric feeling
What happens when someone is addicted to drugs?
If the body relies on drugs a person becomes addicted and wants a higher dosage regularly for the same effect
Why does the body require more drug dosage?
This is because the body’s metabolism becomes used to the drug. The liver secretes enzymes to kill the drug so that the dose has to increase to have thesameeffect for the first time.
What are antibiotics?
Chemicals made from micro organisms (fungi&bacteria) and are used to kill pathogens
Penicillin
This is the first antibiotic discovered and produced by fungi in a fermenter
How does penicillin work?
Inhibits cell wall formation in bacteria and destroy the cell wall causing contents to leak.
It also prevents substances from moving in and out the cell membrane.
Why can’t antibiotics treat viral-diseases?
-viruses have hard protein coats and cannot be destroyed
-viruses are acellular, thus cannot carry out important metabolism without the cell host.
- Antibiotics only target a specific bacterial structure but not human cells
Explain how Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria form
Misuse or overuse because of doctors
What do you call the overuse of antibiotics?
Menicillin Resistant Staphylococcus
