Nerves of the upper limb Flashcards
What does the brachial plexus supply?
The brachial plexus is the nervous supply to the upper limb including all but 1 extrinsic back muscle
Containing both sensory and motor components
What is the brachial plexus derived from
The brachial plexus is derived from the anterior rami of C5-C8 and T1
What is the pattern of the brachial plexus?
Roots
Trunks
Divisions
Cords
Branches(nerves)
What does brachial plexus mean
Brachial – refers to the arm
Plexus – intricate network or arrangement
What are dermatomes
Dermatomes are areas of skin innervated by a spinal segment
What are 3 useful dermatome landmarks in the upper limb?
1) Thumb is C6
2) Middle finger is C7
3) Little finger is C8
What are myotomes?
Myotomes are a group of muscles innervated by a single spinal segment, usually with a common action
What muscles do the brachial plexus emerge from?
The brachial plexus emerges from between the scalenus medius and the scalenus anterior muscles in the root of the neck
Where does the brachial plexus pass underneath?
Passes underneath the clavicle and out into the axilla
What does the brachial plexus surround in the axilla?
The brachial plexus raps around the axillary artery in the axilla
What structures wrap around the front of the brachial plexus?
The subclavian artery and clavicle wrap around the front of the brachial plexus
What structures pass over the top and in between the brachial plexus?
The dorsal scapular artery and the suprascapular artery pass over the top and in between parts of the brachial plexus
What can the roots of the brachial plexus be used for
A regional anaesthesia target
How is the brachial plexus found?
The brachial plexus is found by looking for the scalene groove between the scalenus anterior and medius
Draw the brachial plexus
How many roots form how many trunks?
5 roots become 3 trunks
What does each trunk divide into?
Each trunk has an anterior and posterior division (3 trunks become 6 divisions)
Where do of the brachial plexus divisions take place?
Behind the clavicle
What 3 ways do these divisions come together and what do they form?
1) The anterior division of the superior and middle trunk come together to form the lateral cord
2) All of the posterior divisions come together to form the posterior cord
3) The anterior division of the inferior trunk continues on by itself to form the medial cord
What are 5 major terminal branches of the brachial plexus and what do they form
1) Musculocutaneous nerve
2) Median nerve
3) Radial nerve
4) Axillary nerve
5) Ulnar nerve
What sensory function does the musculocutaneous nerve provide?
Lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm
What motor function does the musculocutaneous nerve provide?
Anterior compartment muscles of the arm
What sensory function does the median nerve provide?
Area on the lateral side of the palm
What motor function does median nerve provide?
- Anterior compartment muscles of the forearm
- Thenar muscles of the hand
