- Olfactory
- sense of smell and taste
What nerve is tested with reading and peripherals?
- Optic
- ask patient for any blurred, spotty, loss of, or tunnel vision
What nerve does response to light test?
- Oculomotor
What does looking at your nose test?
- Trochlear
- tested during quadrants
What does rubbing the face and clenching the jaw test?
- Trigeminal
- governs sensation of the forehead and muscles for chewing
What does the finger to four quadrants test?
- Abducens
- lateral movement of the eye
What does smiling, frowning, and whistling test?
- Facial
- examine facial folds for symmetry
What does the rubbing of fingers in ears test?
- Acoustic
- hearing and balance
What is the gag reflex test?
- Glossopharyngeal
- not normally tested
What does having the patient say “ahhh” test?
- Vagus
- look for hoarseness in tone
- also controls heartbeat
What does shrugging the shoulders and turning the neck test?
- Spinal Accessory
- opposite side of effected nerve will be weak
What does sticking the tongue out test?
- Hypoglossal
- tongue will roll to affected side
