nerves Flashcards

Q

Q

What is the diffrence between the central and periphral nervous system?

A
  • The central nervous sytem compromises of the brain and spinal cord and anaylises inputs from sensory organs wheras the periphral is responble for all other neveres in the body and transmits infomtion to and from the CNS.

Q

What are the main parts of the brain and what do they do?

A
  • Dura Mater is a thick membrane and cotains a drainage system for blood
  • Arachnoid mater has a spider web apperance and is a shock absorber
  • Pia mater is a blood brain barrier for protection
  • sulcie and gyri maximise the surface area

Q

What is the main diffrences in the Thalamus and Hypothalumus?

A
  • The Thalumus connects the cerebral cortex to the midbrain and acts as a centre for brain perception wheras the Hypothalumus connects the nervous and endocrine systems.
  • The thalumus regulates contiousness, sleep and alertness wheras the Hypothalumus works with the pitary gland to secrete hormones and regualte hunger and emotions.

Q

What are the 3 parts of the Brain stem and examples of what they do?

A
  • Midbrain controls visual and auditory processing
  • Pons controls motor commands for eye movments and facial expressions ect
  • Medulla connects to spinalo cord and helps control PB and heart rate

Q

Whats the diffrence between Afferent and Efferent nerves?

A
  • Afferent are sensory nerves which carry signals from reporters in the skin and muscles or internal organs wheras Efferent are motor nerves which carry signals from the CNS to the target destination to trigger a responce such as hormone secretion. In other words efferent means exit from the brain to the target.
