Nerve supply to the reproductive organs Flashcards
What are the two main components?
Autonomic
Somatic
What makes up the somatic?
- Pudendal nerve
- Genitofemoral nerve
- Ilioinguinal nerve
Genitofemoral nerve root?
L1/L2 via lumbar plexus
Enters the deep inguinal ring
Ilioinguinal nerve root?
L1 via the lumbar plexus
Enters the superficial inguinal ring
Pudendal nerve
S2-S4 via the sacral plexus
What does the ilioinguinal nerve supply?
Sensory function:
- Supplies the labia in females
- Supplies the root of the penis in males
What does the Genitofemoral nerve supply?
• Motor function :Supplies the CREMASTERIC MUSCLES
• Sensory function
1- Innervates the anterior scrotum in males
2- Innervates the labia in females
• Clinically important in temperature: brings the Testes closer to the skin when cold
Why is the Genito-femoral nerve clinically important?
Brings the Testes closer to the skin when cold
What does it innervate?
The skin and muscles of the perineum
What is the anatomical route of the pudendal nerve?
travel from Pelvis to Perineum via the Gluteal region is important to understand For bilateral nerve block for pain relief in childbirth- SPINE OF ISCHIUM IMPORTANT
Sympathetic fibres of the hypogastric plexus?
• L1/L2
Supply 1- The vas deferens 2- The seminal glands 3- The prostate 4- The epididymis
Sympathetic fibres via the ovarian/pelvic plexus
female genital tract
parasympathetic fibres from s2-s4
- Supply the female genital tract
- Innervate erectile tissue In males and females
