Q

Explain the ion movement contributing to the resting membrane potential

A

Na/K+ ATPase pump
2 potassium in, 3 sodium out
Potassium leak channels - move down concentration gradient out of the cell
Sodium leak channels (move down conc gradient) very few sodium channels so little movement
Potassium channels held in concentration and electrostatic equilibrium
Chloride move down concentration gradient into the cell
Chloride repelled out of cell by electrostatic gradient.
Gibbs-donnan effect

Q

Described the action potential

A

sodium channels open
-55mv = threshold potential
Na channels open - rapid influx
Potassium channel open much slower.
35mv = peak potential
Sodium channels inactivation gate closed channels
Potassium efflux begins
relative and absolute refractory periods.
