Q

What are the functions of the meninges ?

A
  1. To provide protection and cushioning

2. Provide a framework or a support network to support the vasculature

Q

What makes up arachnoid mater?

A

A sheet like layer in contact with dura mater and a system of trabeculae connecting the layer with the pia mater

Note - the cavity between the trabeculae is the subarachnoid slave filled with CSF (hydraulic cushion)

Q

What makes up pia mater?

A

Loose CT containing many blood vessels covered by squamous cells.

It is very thin and tightly adhered to the surface of the brain and spinal cord. It is the only covering that follows the contours of the brain

16
Q

What is the choroid plexus?

A

A collection of cells that produce the cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain

17
Q

How many choroid plexuses are there in the brain?

A

4 - one in each ventricle

18
Q

What type of cells are the choroid plexuses?

A

Modified ependymal cells

19
Q

What type of capillaries are present in the ventricles of the brain?

A

Fenestrated

20
Q

What is the purpose of the CSF? (5)

A
  1. Buoyancy 1500g —— 25-50g
  2. Protection
  3. Prevention of brain ischaemia
  4. Homeostasis
  5. Clearing waste
21
Q

What is hydrocephalus ?

A

Abnormal accumulation of CSF ‘water on the brain’
