Nerve- Meninges and CSF Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of the meninges from the most superficial to the deepest layer?
Dura Mater
Arachnoid mater
Pita mater
What do the meninges cover?
Brain and spinal cord
In the brain where is the grey and white matter?
White - middle
Grey - along the outside
Which matter contains highly myelinated neurons?
White matter (a lot of lipids - fatty tissue)
What do ependeyml cells line?
The spaces in the brain - the ventricles
Where do you find the meninges?
Between the skull and the brain
What are the functions of the meninges ?
- To provide protection and cushioning
2. Provide a framework or a support network to support the vasculature
What makes up dura mater?
Dense CT continuous with periosteum of skull
What makes up arachnoid mater?
A sheet like layer in contact with dura mater and a system of trabeculae connecting the layer with the pia mater
Note - the cavity between the trabeculae is the subarachnoid slave filled with CSF (hydraulic cushion)
What is the name of the projections from the arachnoid mater to the layer above ?
Arachnoid granulation
What are arachnoid granulation needed for?
To get rid of CSF by transferring it to venous blood
What makes up pia mater?
Loose CT containing many blood vessels covered by squamous cells.
It is very thin and tightly adhered to the surface of the brain and spinal cord. It is the only covering that follows the contours of the brain
What are the arachnoid mater and pia mater referred to as together ?
Leptomeninges - associated with CSF
What does a subarachnoid haemorrhage mean?
A loss of blood beneath the arachnoid layer
What does a subdural hematoma refer to?
A collection of blood beneath the dura mater
