Cartilage Flashcards
What are the three types of cartilage ?
- Hyaline
- Fibrocartilage
- Elastic
What are the three layers of the embryo ?
Endoderm
Mesoderm **
Ectoderm
What cells produce cartilage ?
Chondroblast
What does cartilage allow the tissue to do?
- withstand mechanical stress without permanent distortion
- shock absorber ; sliding area for joints on articulating surface of bone (FACILITIES BONE MOVEMENT )
- some bone forms from a previous cartilaginous pattern
Why is it hard for cartilage to repair itself ?
As it is avascular
What is a mature chondroblast called ?
Chondrocyte
What is a chondrocyte responsible for ?
Maintenance of the tissue
What appearance do chondroblasts have ?
Flattened cells with flattened nuclei
Where do chondrocytes live?
Within the Lacuna
What is the lacuna ?
A space within the matrix
Where do you find hyaline cartilage ?
- articular surfaces of bones
- trachea and bronchus
- costal cartilages
- nasal cavity and nose
Where do you find elastic cartilage ?
- pinna of external ear
- epiglottis
Where do you find fibrocartilage ?
- tendon insertions
- pubic symphysis
- intervertebral discs
- articulate meniscus
What does hyaline cartilage provide ?
A lubricated surface for movable joints and acts as a shock absorber
What type of collagen is hyaline cartilage composed of ?
Type II
