Nerve Lesions Flashcards
if suprascapular nerve is damaged, what movements are affected?
weak abduction and lateral rotation of the shoulder
if thoracodorsal nerve is injured what movements are affected?
weakness adducting, internally rotating and extending the arm
what three common motions will be hindered with injury to the thoracodorsal nerve?
climbing
rowing
pushing out of a chair
what are three motions affected with musculocutaneous nerve damage?
flexion of arm
supination of arm
sensory loss of lateral aspect of arm
what roots are involved in upper brachial plexus injury? what is another name for it?
C5 and C6 AKA Erbs palsy
what roots are involved in lower brachial plexus injury? what is another name for it?
C8 and T1
Klumpke Palsy
what motion occurs to lead to injury of upper brachial plexus?
excessive lateral stretching between head and shoulder
how does limb change in erbs palsy?
adducted, internall rotated, pronated and extended at the elbow
how does erbs palsy affect the hand? what is this known as?
fingers and wrist flex…called waiters tip hand
what movement causes lower brachial plexus injuries?
upper limb suddenly pulled superiorly
how does Klumpke palsy change the upper extremity?
thin atrophied hand and loss of sensory along C8 and T1 dermatomes
where do you lose sensory on upper extremity with Klumpke palsy?
medial arm and hand
what three changes occur with median nerve injuries?
weakness of anterior forearm muscles
atrophy of thenar muscles
sensory deficit in first 3.5 digits
where does median nerve injury lead to sensory loss?
first 3.5 digits
when you ask a patient to make a fist and they have median nerve injury…what happens? what is this called?
hand of benediction
can’t flex the thumb or 2-3 digits but can flex 4/5 digits
radial nerve damage usually leads to what clinical phenomenon?
wrist drop
what two muscle groups are hindered with radial nerve injury?
extensors of wrist and the supinator of the forearm
where do you lose sensory with radial nerve damage?
between thumb and index finger on dorsal side of hand
what does an ulnar nerve injury lead to in upper extremity?
loss of fine movements of the hand…atrophied hand
when you ask a patient with ulnar nerve injury to make a fist, what happens? what is this called?
ulnar claw hand
4/5 digits cannot flex but rest can
what other nerve injury can lead to a hand of benediction? why?
ulnar nerve…this is when they are opening their hand instead of making a fist as seen in median…the lumbricals are not working for the 4/5 digits so they cannot extend them well
the posterior and anterior shoulder muscles should be considered as users of what nerve roots?
C5 and C6
the posterior brachium muscles should be considered as users of what nerve roots?
C6 C7 C8
the anterior brachium muscles should be considered as users of what nerve roots?
C5 and C6
the posterior antebrachium muscles should be considered as users of what nerve roots?
C6 C7 C8
the deep group of anterior antebrachium muscles should be considered as users of what nerve roots?
C7 C8 T1
the superficial group of anterior antebrachium muscles should be considered as users of what nerve roots?
C6 C7 C8
the anterior and posterior muscles of the hand should be considered as users of what nerve roots?
C8 and T1
what two forearm muscles are exceptions to these rules? what are their nerve roots?
brachioradialis C5 C6
supinator C5 C6
