Nerve Injury Flashcards
Pain, numbness, paraesthesia to lateral thigh
Lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh
Etiology of lateral cutenous nerve damage
- increased abdominal pressure antepartum
- prolonged hip flexion intrapartum
Area of compression: on exiting the pelvis under the inguinal ligament
Meralgia paraesthetica - what is the cause?
Lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh compression
Risk factors for lumbosacral compression
- CPD
- fetal malposition
- forceps delivery
What is the outcome of lumbosacral compromise
-Foot drop due to common peroneal neuropathy
- paraesthesia lateral calf and foot
-Weakness of knee extension
-Paraesthesia to anterior thigh, medial calf
(Knee giving away and difficulty climbing stairs)
Femoral nerve
Mechanism of femoral nerve injury
Stretch and compression by inguinal ligament
Weakness of hip adduction and loss of sensation over medial thigh
Obturator nerve (L2-4)
Mechanism of obturator injury
- compression by fetal head
- stretch on nerve from lithotomy position
