Nephrotic syndrome. Nephritic syndrome. Flashcards
1
Q
What is nephrotic syndrome?
A
- a combination of nephrotic range proteinuria and a low serum albumin level and edema.
- can be primary or secondary
- Nephrotic syndrome can be primary, being a disease specific to the kidneys, or it can be secondary, being a renal manifestation of a systemic general illness.
- in all cases, injury to glomeruli is an essential feature
- Kidney diseases that affect tubules and interstitium, such as interstitial nephritis, will not cause nephrotic syndrome.

Q
What is Nephritis syndrome?
A
- clinical syndrome taht presents as hematuria, elevated blood pressure, decreases urineoutput, and edema.
- The major underlying pathology is inflammation of the glomerulus that results in nephritic syndrome.

Q
How to tell teh difference between nephrotic and nephritic syndrome?
A
In nephritic syndrome, you’d expect urine sediment with red cells, white cells, and protein, but not to the same level as you see with nephrotic syndrome.
The patient usually has a more prominent creatinine elevation and hypertension as well.
