Nephrology Flashcards
Give examples of drugs which should be stopped in an AKI as they may worse renal function
NSAIDs Aminoglyclosides ACE-I ARDs Diuretics
Hyperkalaemia may occur in an AKI
How do you treat hyperkalaemia?
1) IV sodium gluconate - Stabilise the cardiac membrane
2) Insulin and dextrose infusion // salbutamol nebs - ST shift of potassium into the intracellular fluid
3) Calcium resonium // loop diuretics // dialysis - removal of potassium from the body
Give the 2 main causes for acute tubular necrosis
Toxins - drugs
Ischaemia - reduced perfusion
What 2 investigations do you want to do for ATN and what would they show to confirm the dx? (not bloods)
Urinalysis - muddy casts
R USS - increased renal size
What abx do you use in pyelonephritis?
Ciprofloxacin
