When, where and what was the Nepal eartjhquake?

A

on the 25th of april 2015 nepal experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake
this was followed by an avalanche on Mt everest and a second 7.4 magnitude earthquake on the 12th of may and numerous landslides and aftershocks
it had a focal depth of about 11km some even scoring 6.7 on the richter scale

what are the primary effects of the Nepal earthquake?

A

there were 8600 deaths and 16800 injured people
50% of schools and 26 hospitals collapsed as they were older and not aseismic
75,000 people were unreachable by air the highest loss of life was in the capital, Kathmandu due to its population density and number of building
3,150,000 people were cut off as roads were badly damaged and impassable

what were the secondary impacts of the Nepal earthquake?

A

there was a short term loss of tourist revenue which is a major industry in Nepal
1 million were made homeless
an estimated economic loss of 35% of Nepals GDP
the earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount everest killing 17 people
suffered lots of aftershocks some scoring up to 6.7 on the richter scale

what are the short term responses to the Nepal earthquake?

A

Inflatable hospitals were used to treat the wounded
90% of the soldiers from the Nepalese army were mobilized to help
Tent cities were set up in Kathmandu to help the homeless
The red cross provided temporary shelters for 225,000 people
India and pakistan sent several aircraft carrying medical supplies, a mobile hospital and a 40-strong disaster response team with rescue dogs

what are the long term responses to the Nepal earthquake?

A

Mount everest was reopened for tourists by august 2015
the durbar square heritage site was reopened in JUne 2015 to encourage tourists to come back in time for the tourest season
6 months later the FAO (food and agricultral organization) started a recovery phase to help the crop production
The FAo also trained people to maintain and fix irrigation channels damaged by the earthquake
