when, where and what was the christchurch earthquake?

A

on 22nd of february 2011 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake lasting 12 seconds hit new zealands south island (christchurch)
the epicentre was 10km away from at a focus (depth) of 5km

it was an aftershock of a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in 2010 but was much more severe

what were some primary effects of the earthquake?

A

christchurch cathedral lost its spire
building damage was widespread beacuse buildings had already been weakened in 2010 earthquake
liquefaction produced 400,000 tonnes of silt
roads and bridges were severley damaged in places

A

an economic cost of NZ$ 3.5 billion
181 people were killed
10,000 houses needed to be rebuilt due to landslides and the earthquake
high rise buildings constructed in the last 30 years generally survived
christchurch international airport was closed but was completely unaffected

what are some short term responses to the christchurch earthquake?

A

an emergency response plan was in place within two hours of the earthquake happening
the new zealand defence force provided equipment, transport, evacuation, food and water aid to 1000 homeless people
electricity companies worked around the clock to restore electricity to areas that were cut off
search teams were sent from UK,USA, Japan, Taiwan, China and Singapore
