Erosion Flashcards

1
Q

What are factors effecting erosion rate?

A

-strength of winds
-type of wave
-type of rock
-larger fetch
-if it has a beach to act as a buffer
-headlands where waves can converge on and gain height and erosive energy

Q

What are the three types of erosion?

Describe them.

A

Hydraulic action- the sheer impact of the waves against the coastline. Also air can get trapped in the cracks and caves and suddenly compressed by the breaking waves which increases the pressure on the rock

Abrasion/corrasion- The breaking waves throw sand and pebbles against the rock face which can break off pieces of rock and cause undercutting

Attrition- particles carried by the waves are eroded as they collide with each other and the cliff face. Boulders and rock are broken down into round pebbles or sand sized particles which are easier for the waves to carry away

Q

What is it called when the coast is made of the same rock and different rock?

A

When the coast is made of different rock it is called a discordant coast

When it’s made of the same type of rock it’s called concordant coast
