Neorealism / Structural Realism Flashcards
Neorealism / Structural Realism
Emphasizes the influence of the international system’s structure on state behavior.
Shifts the focus from
the human nature-based explanations of classical realism to a systemic analysis.
National politics is driven by
anarchy, States and distribution of power.
Anarchic structure creates…
a self-help system in which states act to maximize their security and relative power to ensure their survival.
Categorizes distribution of power…
as unipolar, bipolar, or multipolar
Unipolarity
is stable but unlikely. Smaller states will engage in balancing power.
Bipolarity
we have two power centres that are stable and likely. Smaller states become part of spheres of influence.
Multipolarity
means several roughly equal states. very unstable
likely but creates changing temporary and complicated alliances.
Key to neorealism is the concept of
balancing and bandwagoning.
Balancing
States may balance by allying against a dominant power to prevent it from becoming too strong
Bandwagoning
States may bandwagon by aligning with strong state to gain security.
Power =
Material capabilities
There is always
uncertainty
Nature of International system
forces states to make decisions that they make and these overtime influences future decisions that the new leaders will make.
