Describe how you would identify a benign neoplasm?
For in confined local area, have a pushing outer margin, well differentiated, often exophytic
Describe how you would identify a malignant neoplasm?
Irregular outer margin and shape, areas of necrosis and ulceration, often endophytic
What is meant by exophytic?
Tends to grow outward beyond the surface epithelium from which it originates
Describe a sessile shape gross appearance of a tumour
Attached directly by its base without stalk or peduncle
What is a polyp?
Abnormal growth of tissue projecting from mucous membrane
What is a pedunculated polyp?
A poly with a stalk
What does an annular gross appearance of a tumour look like?
Ring shaped
What is a sarcoma?
Malignant neoplasm of connective tissue
What is -oma?
Benign neoplasm of connective tissue
What is an adenoma?
Benign neoplasm of glandular tissue
What is a carcinoma?
Malignant neoplasm of a stratified squamous or transitional epithelium
What is an adenocarcinoma?
Malignant neoplasm of glandular tissue
What is a papilloma?
Benign neoplasm of stratified squamous or transitional epithelium
