Neoplasia Flashcards
adaptive v neoplastic changes
adaptive- controlled, physiologic, reversible
neoplasmic- autonomous, pathologic, irreversible
leiomyoma
smooth muscle benign neoplasm
well differentiated cells- looks like the tissue it came from- indicates benign status
“fibroid”
can be found on uterus
benign v malignant
benign- localized, circumscribed, well differentiated
malignant- invasive, mestatasis, show less differentiation
squamous papilloma
benign tumor of squamous skin
found on tonsil
carcinoma
malignancy of epitheleal origin
less well differentiated, invasive
metastasis
invasion of lymph vessels or blood vessels
exit and growth at a secondary site
attachment in a distant site
benign neoplasm roots
glandular- adenoma fibrocyte- fibroma fat cell- lipoma smoot muscle- leiomyoma bone- osteoma
malignant neoplasm roots
glandular- adenocarcinoma fibrocyte- fibrosarcoma fat cell- lipsarcoma smooth muscle- leiomyosarcoma bone- osteosarcoma
exceptions to naming rules
melanoma, leukemia, lymphoma, astrocytoma and glioma are all malignant
desmoplasia
fibrous rxn in response to invasive tumor
pedunculated polyp
polyp has a stalk
sessile polyp
polyp is low, on the surface
teratoma
shows multiple lines of differentation b/c neoplasm is in stem cells
rhabdomyosarcoma
skeletal muscle malignant cancer
hamartoma
a tumor but not a neoplasm
malformation
